Fudan Cotton Contribution

In March 20, 2012, a group of experts on the implementation of the cotton project implementation program for new varieties of GMO in China held a news conference at Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. At the meeting, the expert group formally informed and announced that with the support of genetically modified major projects, significant progress has been made in the research of the second generation of transgenic cotton fibers in China, which has jumped to the leading level in the world and has independent intellectual property rights such as international invention patents. This progress has laid a solid foundation for the long term dependence on imports of high-end cotton in China. The modification of transgenic cotton fiber is another important scientific and technological achievement in cotton high technology field after China's transgenic insect resistant cotton.

Yang Jinshui, National Key Laboratory of genetic engineering, Fudan College of Sciences professor The leading research group has actively participated in the second generation of genetically modified cotton fiber improvement project in China, and has made a significant contribution to the progress of the project. Since 2005, Professor Yang Jinshui's research team has made full use of the advantages of functional genes in Fudan University, and has worked closely with the Cotton Research Institute of China to carry out the research on the improvement of cotton fiber quality. Cotton fiber quality is the main obstacle restricting the production of high quality cotton in China. Improving and improving the quality of cotton fiber in China is also a difficult problem in cotton breeding for a long time.

The improvement of cotton fiber quality involves the length of cotton fiber. hardness In terms of elasticity and lint index, fiber length is the most important index. Cotton fibers are generated by the processes of seed epidermal cells, each of which consists of a single cell. Professor Yang Jinshui's research group has conducted in-depth research on the regulation of plant cell size for a long time, and has accumulated rich experience. It has isolated and cloned the gene csRRM, which has the regulation of plant cell size, and applied for a patent. On the basis of previous studies, Professor Yang Jinshui's task force put forward an innovative proposal to introduce csRRM gene into cotton after modification, and to increase cell volume by delaying cell cycle, so as to achieve the purpose of improving fiber quality. Professor Yang Jinshui's research group and Li Fuguang Research Fellow of the China Cotton Research Institute, after careful discussion, careful thinking and careful design, started the transgenic cotton quality improvement experiment in 2006. After 6 years of unremitting efforts, a number of transgenic cotton lines with high value in cotton breeding and production have been obtained. The high-quality boll csRRM transgenic cotton germplasm materials, which were completed by CMA and Fudan University, increased the average boll weight of cotton from 5.5 grams to 7.5 grams, and boll weight increased by 36%, which was significantly higher than that of common cotton varieties. Cotton is easy to bells due to the synchronous growth of reproduction and vegetative growth. CsRRM transgenic cotton has stronger growth potential and more dry matter accumulation, and its boll setting ability is more than 20% higher than that of ordinary cotton varieties. The most important point is that csRRM transgenic cotton significantly increased the length of cotton fiber, so that the length of control cotton fiber increased from 30.5mm to 33.5mm on average, increasing by 3mm over that of ordinary cotton varieties.

Cotton is China's main economic crop and textile industrial raw material, it is more than 100 million. Cotton grower The important source of economy also involves the employment of 19 million textile workers. During the "11th Five-Year" period, China's cotton textile and apparel exports amounted to US $about 870000000000, with an average annual export volume of US $177 billion 800 million, accounting for 40% of the global textile and apparel exports. In 2011, exports amounted to US $about 210000000000, an increase of US $about 20000000000 over the previous year, an increase of 10.7%. The great progress made in the research of the second generation of transgenic cotton in China has laid a good foundation for the development of cotton seed industry in 12th Five-Year. It is expected that with the joint efforts of cotton science and technology workers in China, the advantages of our universities, scientific research units and production enterprises will be brought into full play, and great progress will be made in cotton high technology and cotton production in China.
